Биография

Joe Crow Ryan is older than he looks. At New York's Sidewalk Cafe, he became part of the long-running Anti-Folk scene (see: The REAL Sound of Anti-Folk) and met up with the collaborators that would help turn his work into records. In 2009, Yondas Eso (of the bands Reign of Peace and Creaky Boards) recorded an all-day session with Joe that would form the majority of his first two albums. Justin Remer (Elastic No-No Band) signed Joe to his fledgling record label, Weemayk Music, and curated Joe's albums. To create a fuller picture of Joe's style, he combined the Yondas Eso studio recordings with live performances recorded at the Sidewalk and field recordings captured by Elastic No-No Band's Doug Johnson while Joe busked in a Brooklyn subway station. Brooklyn commuters came to know Joe for his busking "act," which includes calling out "Train Solo!" when an arriving train interrupts his song. He gained international attention for his busking after he was profiled in a video for VICE. In addition to Yondas Eso, Joe recorded with Anti-Folk friends Brian Speaker and Major Matt Mason Usa. The result was 4 albums and 2 EPs in the "This Machine Kills Purists" series, which were all later compiled into The Compleat This Machine Kills Purists collection, which includes an album's worth of outtakes. In 2019, a forgotten recording session was rediscovered and released as Crowcophony.
