The 2010s have divided the hip-hop landscape into three nations: you have the artists that lean on the more traditional roots of soulful samples and pocket drumming; you have artists that favor beats full of seismic 808s, heavy synthesizers, and breakneck hi-hat sprays; and you have the artists forged from the internet, eschewing all prior structures for experimental digressions. While the overlapping portion of these three spheres is a narrow window, there are a few artists out there possessing such panoptic powers, and few are ascending in talent and plaudit quicker than West Orange, New Jersey’s Angelo Mota.
