Y-Not is both a band and a philosophy. This present moment is all we ever have. So why not embrace it, ourselves, and each other on the most authentic level possible? The band centers around the songwriting of Tony Geren, who had been playing his original music and was involved in various forms of community activism from 2013-2017. By 2017, Tony was creating music speaking to both the changing state of the world and what he was moving through on a personal level. The purpose was to create a message and a rhythm that spoke to the root of humanity, using music to help foster a recognition and embrace of our deepest truths individually, relationally, and societally. The question was: How can we allow for a more free world, where we communicate the things that are toughest to talk about, breathe love into our connections and stand up for what is right? Late 2017, Tony began to invite musicians to play with him that resonated with the message. The music became more than just Tony, and became Y-Not. In 2018 their first show was in Detroit MI. By late 2019, the band had expanded in membership and recorded their first single "Lover of Mine", and their first EP "Be The Love You Seek". The music and atmosphere during shows is intended to be empowering, exciting, and hopeful. With soundscapes involving elements of Funk, Alternative Rock, Jam, Spoken word Poetry, and Hip Hop, Y-Not invites listeners on a journey of self discovery, while dancing the night away in community.
