    Gospel music came to Africa through the music of Zimbabwe-born guitarist and vocalist Machanic Manyeruke (born in 1950) and his three-piece group, the Puritans. Manyeruke initially attracted attention in the early '70s as the leader of a large choir, the Gospel Singers. Forming the Puritans in 1985, Manyeruke took a scaled-down approach, setting his soulful vocals and electric guitar to the accompaniment of keyboards and two female vocalists. The result was a sound that allowed his Bible-based tunes to soar with passion and spiritual conviction.
