The latest release from Authors, “Dead Oak,” is a massive-sounding effort which took the band back to the drawing board to re-evaluate what they wanted to bring to the music scene, readily combining elements of metalcore with the rap-metal movement of the 90’s. Each member of the band strongly contributes to the performances. Guitarist Nich Frost hooks the listener with aggressive, huge riffs. The rhythm section, consisting of drummer Zach Goodman and bassist Collin Russell, continually builds strong grooves and dynamic flow which provide the platform for Alex Goodman’s anguished, fast-paced vocals and the angsty, catchy choruses delivered by Collin. The album centers around a dying, ancient forest where the protagonist is hunted relentlessly by shadowy figures who prey on his memories and are intent on driving him to insanity. The lyrics are rich and evocative, bringing strong imagery to mind as the band builds the twisted sonic landscape. Authors last release, Tides, had over 2000 downloads in 2014, independent of label support. Tides was followed by regional touring as the band secured their foothold in the midwest. Authors quickly became known for the wild live shows they put on and the edge they bring to the genre. Authors remains determined to create innovate albums, put on emotionally transparent performances, and spread positive vibes to everyone they meet. Now, with the release of “Dead Oak,” the band is poised to keep building and take the music world by storm.
