Slow moving melodies and a uniquely nostalgic vocal style; the works of Ruby Pettit hold a mysterious space of their own in the alternative folk genre. Ruby has developed a stirring and evocative sound through intuitive experimentation involving a range of traditional and modern folk genres. After moving to Glasgow in 2019, the West Australian based musician became charmed by the dramatic landscape of the Scottish Highlands, encouraging an exploration into folk sounds from eras past. Her earliest releases were recorded in make-shift home studios while travelling, exploring warm, lo-fi analogue sounds. Shortly after moving back to her hometown, she recorded and self-released her debut EP When I Was a Dreamer (July 2021). The EP expresses a more distinct and deep vocal style with an a capella title track; a gesture to her influence of Appalachian music. Ruby's debut album Still We Are Rising was recorded on reel-to-reel tape over two stormy days in July 2022. Ten warm and delicate folk pieces highlighting her haunting vocal quaver backed by gentle acoustic fingerpicking and cozy tape hiss- the album is a collection of new works and re-recordings of Pettit's earlier songs, with delicate vocal harmonies and poetic lyricism at its forefront. Still We Are Rising has all the low fidelity charm of a crackling vinyl platter from the 1970’s, blended with sounds from the modern freak-folk movement, an invitation into a timeless space conjured by Pettit and her musical diarising.
