Биография

Alabama’s rock ‘n’ roll troubadour Dan Sartain (1981-2021) first attracted attention in 2005 with the release of ‘Dan Sartain Vs The Serpientes’. Released in the US on John Reis’ Swami label a year previously, it was then released in the UK by OLI Records, and the word of mouth on this new authentic Southern talent began to spread. To support the release, Dan travelled to the UK and performed a series of dates, and in an industry often cursed by the pursuit of style over substance, his honest, raucous performances encouraged a loyal live support. He was invited to perform live sessions XFM and 6Music, Steve Lamacq made his single ‘Record Of The Week’, as did Mark Radcliffe on his Radio 2 slot, and Zane Lowe supported on his Radio 1 evening show. Heavy praise for his LPs and live performances followed from critics and fellow performers alike, including Babyshambles’ bassist Drew McConnell who namechecked Sartain in his ‘Tracks Of The Year’ in The Independent. Sartain warped his 50’s twang inspired guitar tones and experimented with electronics on the likes of ‘Dudesblood’ and ‘Century Plaza’, which incorporated grinding synths and drum-machines recalling the likes of Suicide and Depeche Mode, which further solidified his maverick status. On his final album ‘Arise, Dan Sartain, Arise’ he cut away everything but what is completely necessary to craft something that couldn’t better represent one of the last true outsider artists of an immortal genre.
