Boni is a French singer and multi-instrumentalist, whose dynamic multi-genre approach is fusing elements of alternative jazz with hip-hop, indie, and even classical music. Boni’s sound is both eclectic and experimental. Initial impressions of his discography suggest songs you may have heard in a lo-fi playlist somewhere, but that shouldn’t obscure the artistry that Boni brings to his compositions. Yes, the music is chill and relaxing, but it is the consequence of a detailed and rigorous approach to creating atmospheric, ethereal soundscapes that, at their best, seem to walk a fine line between our immediate reality and our dreams. That framework may inform his approach, but within it he explores a wide array of emotions and sonic sensations, and these “dream songs” can come emerge in a plethora of psychedelic forms. Boni grew up in Paris, where he studied classical music before beginning to explore jazz, hip hop, and later electronic music. That varied background surely informs a certain sense of the transience of life that is evoked in much of his music, with tracks capturing fleeting glimpses of clarity against a web of lush, amorphous ambiguities in the production.
