When Tess Roby, Adam Ohr, and Patrick Lee ( The Beat Escape ) hung out together for the first time, they had no intention of starting a band. It was late 2018, and the three Montreal musicians had gathered at the latter’s Mile End studio, with zero expectations and a mutual admiration of each other’s work. They started playing and almost immediately felt a musical kinship, the kind of telepathic bond where words aren’t necessary for a conversation. Over the next few months, the three became close friends, and found themselves creatively inspired again in a way they’d been long seeking. Songs came flowing out of these informal sessions, the trio writing and producing music communally and in circadian rhythm. Their songs exist as much in the late afternoon glow of a dark winter's day, as they do in a lake on a rowboat during midsummer. The uptempo tracks are hypnotic and smooth, bringing to mind visions of ecstatic dancing in a smoky room lit with blue light. They're weightless and mysterious, simultaneously familiar while unidentifiable. Sitting halfway between spectral dream-pop and abstract dance-oriented soundscapes, it’s music that’s all-enveloping, something that could only be made by musicians who have complete trust in one another. Their debut album, Postcards from the Sun to the Moon, was released in October 2022 via Roby's SSURROUNDSS label.
