Soulmass was founded in 2013, under the original name Kingdoms of Flesh, as a recording project consisting of Brett Windnagle (he/him) and Lux Edwards (they/them). They released The Age of Darkness EP before deciding to change the band name. In 2014, Soulmass released their debut full-length, Despairing Fates, which catapulted them to underground success among fans of the Soulsborne video game franchise with stand-out tracks like Chronicles of the Abysswalker and Hollow. They returned after a hiatus to release their second full-length, The Weakness of Virtue, in 2019, and an improved, remixed/remastered version of Despairing Fates in 2021. Their Eidolon EP in 2022, inspired by Final Fantasy IX, heralded a new direction for the band's music and lyrics following the 2023 release of the third and final album in their Soulsborne-inspired trilogy, Let Us Pray.
