The greatest challenges arise from within. Luke Hemmings aims to consistently raise the bar for himself as a singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist. For the first time, the Sydney-born multi-hyphenate and lead singer of Australian pop-rock band 5 Seconds Of Summer, channels this dedication passion and energy into his solo debut; When Facing the Things We Turn Away From. The process happened purely by accident. 5 Seconds of Summer’s fourth full-length album, C A L M, arrived on March 27, 2020—just as the world fully locked down. Tour plans were promptly postponed, and the group members quarantined in their respective homes. Looking for an outlet, Luke turned to the one thing he knows best; he started writing on acoustic guitar and piano upstairs in his house and didn’t stop for months. This album is a definitive, deeply personal statement about Luke the artist, songwriter, musician and human. “I’m in a constant pursuit of bettering myself in that department. A lot of the songs are about where I’m at today, but some of them are written from the perspective of a 17-year-old kid in the thick of the industry.” He explains. “You’re reflecting on your youth and all of the madness and craziness. It’s like you’re forgetting so many pieces of your life—not from vices or anything—but from the sheer volume. The last 10 years of my life have been a blur and I have had to figure out how to fill a lot of gaps for myself in a positive way”
