Morten Søbyskogens’ wife, Sandra, passed away from brain cancer in 2018 at 31 years-old. As a tribute to her memory, and as a way to deal with his grief, Morten started writing the songs which now make up the debut album of Death of Giants, Ventesorg. This concept album is built on a semi-chronological narrative, from the cancer diagnosis to her tragic death. "Ventesorg" is the norwegian word for anticipatory grief, and the title describes accurately what the album portraits through its melancholic gothic doom atmosphere: It conveys the journey from a long distance relationship between Austria and Norway, the bond of two families, a wedding shaded by the overwhelming shadow of cancer and the inevitable outcome 3.5 years later. Morten is a vocalist, composer and multi-instrumentalist from Oslo, Norway. He has been the singer and main composer of the heavy progressive metal act Frail Grounds since 2005, and has also participated in other musical projects since then. But with Death of Giants, he wanted to explore darker musical territories to relate this emotional journey, and he found doom metal to be the perfect atmospheric framework for this. Drawing influences from gothic, funeral and death/doom metal, but also incorporating a broad range of other references (heavy metal, prog, ambient, black), Morten created a somber layered soundscape where his vocals, from growls to soaring cleans, showcase his versatility as a vocalist.
