The Hidden Gems is a musical project started by Robert Murphy. For the first single, Robert collaborated with singer/songwriter/actress Crystal St. John. Their the first song, “My Favorite Stranger,” was done remotely over the course of several months. They were inspired to explore the concept of unconditional parental love, and thus was born the title “My Favorite Stranger,” which is honestly what every newborn truly is to their parents. Impressed with Crystal St. John’s cover of the Beatles’ “Let It Be,” Robert brought the skeleton of the song to Crystal, and they further collaborated on both the lyrics and melody via emails and demos sent back and forth. They eventually decided to produce the song with a fusion of pop, Brit Rock and Motown styles, bringing on bassist Sean Hurley (John Mayer, Alanis Morrissette), guitarist Leo Abrahams (Regina Spektor, Pail Simon), drummer Dan Konopka (OK Go), horn player Matt DeMerritt (Macy Gray, Beck, De La Soul), pianist Michael Arrom (Steve Vai, Keith Urban), synth player Beau Golden (Lily Allen, Daniel Johns), and mixer Ghian Wright (Paul McCartney, Foo Fighters, Nine Inch Nails). Genre: Pop, indie pop, singer/songwriter, with a dash of funk, shoe gaze, psychedelia, 80’s electronica, 90’s grunge, 60’s folk, and classic rock, and an extra spice of Regina Spektor and Billie Eilish to top it off.
