Roye is a 19 year old songwriter/artist and actor. He is of Jamaican descent but was born in Florida, USA and raised in the Cayman Islands. Roye’s past and current environment heavily influenced his passion for and taste in music. This was instilled in him from a young age as the Caribbean culture consists of unique musical rhythmic patterns. As a result, he grew up listening to genres such as reggae, hip-hop, and dancehall – with admiration for artists like Jah Cure, Barrington Levy and Sean Paul and soon after showed greater interest in music at the age of 14 through freestyle rap battles. On the other end of the spectrum, during his early years, Roye was also fond of Disney classics, especially artist Miley Cyrus and rock bands like MGMT and The Fray. Overtime, he discovered artists such as Drake, Alicia Keys and Lil Wayne through R&B and rap. Later on, as a young adult, Roye expanded his music taste to artists like Justin Bieber, Bryson Tiller, Wiz Khalifa and The Weeknd and at the age of 16, he has also engaged with songs of British artists like Jorja Smith, Dave and Chip while living in the UK for three years. Although Roye has been influenced by several artists, Drake has inspired him the most as Roye appreciates his ability to “blend melody and rap” and the crossover between “succeeding as a musician and an actor.” Roye’s broad taste in music is what makes him such a versatile artist, in which he also states that there is “no limit” to where he can take it.
