River Spirit is a trio from Detroit who, independently, creates a signature style of alternative art pop using mostly guitar and drums and is highlighted by Vanessa Reynolds voice. The project began in 2009 after Reynolds met Dan Steadman while studying together at Detroit’s College for Creative Studies. The project had an early life of Detroit based performances followed by a period of incubation. Reynolds returned to Detroit in 2013 to focus on the project after spending a year in Bed Stuy and working as a tattooist in Queens. Between 2014 and 2016 they released an EP and a handful of singles via Seraphine Collective mixtapes. In 2018 while working on their full length album, Me I Fall, they released EP 2; a stripped-down plaintive take on their sound that opted for drum machine and the use of samples. In the fall of 2018 the title track and first single from Me I Fall debuted on AfroPunk who described it as “haunting one moment and riveting in the next.” Me I Fall was released on Bandcamp in January of 2019 and was also featured in Audiofemme, Earmilk and Detroit Metro Times. In 2019 River Spirit performed at SXSW homemakers showcase and toured the east coast with Wizard Apprentice. March of 2020 River Spirit released Constant Lullaby. 8 songs that show the band sounding more comfortable and confident than ever.
