@maynsounds Charles Maynard, the multi-instrumentalist and producer behind the project MAYN loves to dabble in the surreal. Known for his dark, textural, and emotive electronic music, Maynard draws inspiration from photography and film to create a sonic escape rich with its own narrative. Based in Los Angeles, MAYN grew up playing in bands as a drummer performing up and down the west coast, New York, and SXSW. After having the opportunity to pay his dues as a band member and earning credits for songs placed on MTV and E!, Maynard began to pursue production as a means to shape his own creative vision. Long inspired by storytelling and nostalgia from photography and film, MAYN referenced some of his favorites to help discover his voice as a solo artist. Top inspirations include the cinematic photography of Gregory Crewdson illuminating the eerie moments between catastrophic events and brushes with the unknown—and Stanley Kubrick’s play throughout his films with the fringes of reality and the space-time continuum. His music is largely instrumental, but with the intention of pulling the listener into an alternate plane rich with images of starry skies, fractured pools of reflection, and surreal forms staring back. MAYN carefully layers lush synthesizer sounds that spill over hypnotic rhythm samples and textures without losing sight of the groove.
