Equal parts innovative, earcatching, and introspective, messyroom* is the groundbreaking experimental project 21-year-old Juno Raphael. An initiate of the Bay Area’s DIY music scene, Raphael first cut her teeth playing guitar in the indie-punk band UNPOP. Over time, however, she became more and more interested in the plasticity of electronic music, warping sound as a tool for emotional expression. Coining the term “emotronica” to describe her work, messyroom’s sonic world interweaves the grungy songwriting of Raphael’s roots with the innovative electronic production she’s grown to love. A coalescence of varying genres and influences, messyroom’s music creates the space to violently head bang and lay in bed weeping within a single song.
