Nabalayo is a Kenyan songwriter, producer and multi instrumentalist. She founded the Changanya genre in 2018, a contemporary music practice that has its roots in the aesthetics of Kenyan folk music. She is a trained musician and music educator as well as an orchestral performer. She released her debut album Changanya, named after the genre, on the 31st of October 2020 to mark a new era of music making in East Africa. She has taken on the role of the East African version of a contemporary Griot and her music radiates fierce individuality as well as pride in her cultural heritage.
