There is a popular saying that says we listen and write music to often escape reality. I used to think that was the case for myself for many many years. I thought music was my escape. But then it occurred to me. I'm not escaping reality. I'm escaping my thoughts. It is with making music that I am in a relationship with reality. After all, we have a constant chatter in our heads throughout our days. We are consumed by our thoughts and it often dictates our behaviors. It is only through the quieting of this inner chatter inside our skulls that allows us to stop thinking. And to start listening. For some, that may be through meditation. For others it may be dance. For me, it is music. Music is my discovery of reality.
