Биография

This vocal/instrumental rock group was formed in Brasília (Distrito Federal) in 1984 by Rodrigo Leitão (vocals), José Flores (guitar), Neto Pavanelli (bass/keyboards), and Ronaldo Pereira (drums/percussion). With influences of English bands like Joy Division and the Cure, the Finis Africae soon were opening for Legião Urbana and Plebe Rude. Having included in the compilation "Rumores" (1985) the songs "Van Gogh" and "Ética," the band got good reviews and was invited to record their first solo album, the six-track mini-LP Finis Africae. Just then, Rodrigo Leitão was replaced by Eduardo Moraes at the vocals. With the help of Renato Russo, EMI signed with them in 1987, releasing in the same year the LP Finis Africae, which sold 40,000 copies. In the next year, Pavanelli and Flores were replaced by Roberto Medeiros (bass), Mac Gregor (keyboards), and César Nine (guitar), and the band followed with that formation until 1990. From that year until 1999, they suspended activities, launching in 2000 the CD Maxi-Single (with remixes of their old hits) and performing at the Anos 80 Rock Brasil project in 1999 and 2000, together with other bands of the Brazilian rock of the '80s such as Hojerizah, Violeta de Outono, Zero, and Uns e Outros. During their career, Finis Africae had success with the aforementioned songs and "Armadilha," "Máquinas," "Mentiras," "Ask the Dust," and "Deus Ateu." ~ Alvaro Neder
