His name is Roy. But he's better known as The Very Nice Interesting Singer Man, a singer of novelty songs who once seemed primed to write about every topic imaginable. Songs About My House and Stuff, The Wardrobe Album: Songs About Clothes, and Here's the Office Supplies Album I've Been Telling You About are exactly what you'd think they'd be. Harmless, weird fun. But it was about to get weirder. Roy's early songs are silly and jolly. But beginning with Jobs Songs, he started to show some edginess. By the time Common Phrases came out, it was clear that this man was becoming unhinged. Keep Being Awesome! marked his emotional nadir--and his artistic peak. It's a sprawling, autobiographical concept album about a man's inability to connect with another person. Dark, dense, frightening, joyous, and tinged with just enough humor, it's an album that deserves much more attention than it's received to date. A year later, Games & Sports! marked Roy's return to novelty songs thanks, in part, to the lobotomy he claimed to receive from Matt Farley of Motern Media.
