Биография

The longtime keyboardist/vocalist with goth rockers Christian Death, Gitane Demone began her career on the Southern California new wave scene of the early '80s as a member of the trio Pompeii 99. The group later joined with singer Rozz Williams to make up a new incarnation of his band Christian Death, where Demone remained before relocating to Amsterdam and mounting a solo career in 1989, adopting an increasingly torchy sound over the course of EPs including A Heavenly Melancholy and Lullabies for a Troubled World. After releasing the 1994 live set With Love and Dementia, she reunited with Williams the next year to release Every Dreamhouse Heartache. Demone next collaborated with Mark Ickx under the banner of Demonix, issuing Never Felt So Alive; the solo Am I Wrong? followed in 1998, and in 1999 she returned with both Life in Death and Love for Sale. During the latter year she released a second studio album, Stars of Trash, with the assistance of the band Dreadful Shadows. It was re-released in 2004. In 2008, a biographical DVD set entitled Life After Death was released by Cult Epics. It contained footage from her entire career. DeMone was involved in a project called the Crystelles with daughter Zara Kand, releasing the album Attach and Detach in 2010, and performed with the experimental noise band +DOG+. In 2013, she collaborated with Loopooloo and Syphilis Sauna as Hedone Tears, and released the digital single "Moonlit Paradise." It was re-released with an untitled flip side in 2015 under her own name. The same year she formed the Gitane Demone Quartet with her life partner -- and former Christian Death bandmate -- Rikk Agnew, Paul Roessler (ex-the Screamers), and Deb Venom (Debra Erin Benham). Their sound walked the boundary between gothic rock and contemporary jazz. Their debut single, "Standard Upright," was followed in 2016 by the self-released digital full-length Past the Sun. The album was picked up for physical distribution by Germany's Dark Vinyl Records the following year and released in physical formats. ~ Jason Ankeny, Rovi
