    Freddy Washington was an early jazz pianist best-known for his presence on what some consider the first authentic black New Orleans-style jazz recordings: the 1921 Nordskog/Sunshine sides by trombonist Kid Ory's band. Originally from Houston, Washington moved to California around 1918. He replaced Manuel Manetta in Ory's group in 1921 just prior to the recording session in Santa Monica that produced the historic sides. Washington led his own band during the '20s and '30s and played with former King Oliver bassist Ed "Montudie" Garland and saxophonist Paul Howard (Garland also participated in the 1921 Ory session). Washington recorded with drummer Zutty Singleton in 1944. He remained musically active into his sixties. ~ Chris Kelsey, Rovi
