Ellroy (Leuven, Belgium) was founded by multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter Wim Janssens in 1997. After spending years in other bands, Wim started writing and recording songs on a four-track recorder in his home town Leuven. Rented a big old house together with friend and band member Gaëtan Vandewoude (Isbells) and produced hundreds of demos in the first 3 years of the band’s existence. After a few months of digging and learning the ropes through trial and error, he came up with a sound that set Ellroy apart from the pack. In its hometown, Ellroy was the odd band out, constantly expanding their sound with influences ranging from Captain Beefheart to the Flaming Lips. With a willingness to experiment and a love for all things analog and Wim’s baritone to tie it all together, they went on to record a first 4 track EP (2000) in a professional studio. Still, it didn’t represent the band’s energy and sound and was not released. In 2004 they set out to record their first full-length album in a villa in Keerbergen. The process was chaotic and resulted in another unfinished album. Wim eventually recorded Ellroy’s debut album "Sun Circus” at his home studio in Pellenberg. Signed with Munich Records which released “Sun Circus” in 2006. After recording the follow-up album in 2008 the band was put on hold. Now 25 years after the first demos Ellroy releases a series of tracks that fell through the cracks. “Lost Tapes Pt I “ will come out 5th of May 2023 on STR. Part II in Oct.
