Formed in 2002 as a five-piece, Benzos ushered in a new sound to the New York City indie rock scene, incorporating layered synths, ambient soundscapes and sampled rhythms, all surrounded by angular guitar lines and soaring vocals. The band was comprised of duel frontmen (and first cousins), Christian Celaya and Michael Ortega, Brian Joyce, Steve Bryant and Eiko Peck. 
 Benzos quickly created industry buzz with record labels and management companies scouting their performances and thus earning them a personal invite from music industry legend, Matt Pinfield, to perform live on NY’s 92.3 K-Rock. This showcase led to the band signing both a record deal and representation with Lou Reed’s management company. 
 Soon after, Benzos grew from headlining smaller rock clubs to supporting bands such as The National, Phoenix, TV on the Radio and Blonde Redhead in larger venues, as well as national festivals like Bonnaroo, 10,000 Lakes and Camp Bisco. 
 During their five-year span, they released two LPs, Morning Stanzas (2005) and Branches (2007) and EP, Coup d’etat (2008).
