Biirdie—L.A. residents Jared Flamm (guitar, vocals), Kala Savage (keyboard, vocals) and Richard Gowen (drums)—has perfected the countrified story-song, rooting its pastoral ’70s-pop in orchestral crescendos and lush harmonies - MAGNET On their second album, this Glendale, Calif., band embraces the history of their area, alternately channeling SoCal pop, Laurel Canyon folk, and Sunset Strip rock - PITCHFORK Although the music has obvious antecedents in the Beach Boys, Fleetwood Mac, and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Biirdie also bring in other influences, notably a taste of Grateful Dead-like psychedelia (listen to the start of the six-minute "I'm Gonna Tell You Something") and, largely due to the timbre of Flamm's voice, the Kinks. It is inescapable that Flamm sounds like a Ray Davies who hasn't slept in a couple of nights, and when the band introduces a country-rock feel on "Estelle," for example, it comes off like something from Muswell Hillbillies - ALL MUSIC Elsewhere, 'Petals' is the record's tear jerking moment, a folksy lament sung by co-vocalist Kala Savage, and she combines well with Flamm to make 'Life In A Box' and 'LA Is Mars' sound like the most cotton-wool wrapped of Viva Voce numbers - DROWNED IN SOUND Biirdie is a band of music fans, fans of the same 70s AM gold from which Wilco has pulled to make some of the most fantastic, lovable music of the past twenty years. They sneak in a bit of The Band, Bowie and Gram Parsons for good measure - SMILE POLITELY
