A genre-melting exploration of ancestral rhythms and chants, Penya inhabit a mythical space where percussive symphonies are run through electronic sequencers. “Penya” is derived from the Spanish word “Peña” which describes a meeting place for music and celebration. The trio delves into its musical roots to find out how deeply they reach into the unseen places that keep us anchored to the real world. Penya’s debut LP “Superliminal” (2018) established their sound on the boundaries of multiple genres. With a particular penchant for music from Cuba, it was a shared love of this music that acted as a magnet in drawing the three musicians together. Following the release of Superliminal, a number of live appearances followed including Worldwide Festival Leysin, We Out Here Festival, Fusion Festival Berlin, and a live broadcast from End of the Road Festival on BBC Radio 3's Late Junction. Eager to develop their vision, Penya established Liminal Recordings in February 2021, culminating in the release of its eponymous 2nd album to critical acclaim. The band has struck up strong working relationships with a community of like-minded artists across multiple time-and-space zones. These ongoing musical ventures are a big part of the bands ethos and include collaborative releases with Peruvian duo Dengue Dengue Dengue, Tanzanian artist Msafiri Zawose, and the NY-based producer Photay
