Plucky nylon string guitars and felt-muted pianos embellish the Washington songwriter’s vulnerable examination of belonging, relationships, and the quiet, unsettling moments of regular life. Throughout its 9 songs, brought to life by producer Andrew Judah, ‘I Left a Candle Burning’ methodically and carefully explores musical spaces both intimate and detached; confident, but full of questions. The grey area between optimism and the grind of day-to-day life is best expressed through Sherman’s lyrics themselves: “the morning fog has lifted”, he sings, “to reveal a cloud of smoke”.
