Multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and audio engineer Grace Leckey grew up singing hymns and Americana in a Catholic folk choir. Her debut album Best Supporting Actress explores encounters with Divinity through rejecting traditional scripts and growing up to live and love authentically. The project was recorded in collaboration with her producer, engineer, and friend Garrett Spoelhof. Leckey is one half of the pop-rock band GraceKellie whose roots are in Bloomington, Indiana, and she cites Brandi Carlile, Indigo Girls, Katie Pruitt, BAILEN, Joni Mitchell, Pete Seeger, and Peter, Paul and Mary as influences in her recent songwriting. The record covers a wide range of coming-of-age reflections, from the bittersweet shifting of childhood relationships recounted in “Like I Have Lived A Thousand Lives,” to the joy of newfound independence described in “Rings,” to the confusing, dark heartbreak of losing friends and collaborators to mental illness, as told in “Sweet Anna,” which is dedicated to Anna Doyle, Rameet Singh, all young creatives who lost their lives to mental illness, and the people who love them.
