Nigerian-American singer-songwriter KUKU allies his Yoruba roots with a uniquely soulful and folky sound. His haunting voice, percussive guitar stylings, and mindful yet playful songwriting create an air that is as much culturally resonating as it is worldly. KUKU grew up in Lagos, Nigeria. In his late teens, he returned to the United States to pursue his university education. To afford his tuition, he soon enlisted in United States Army. Though he calls his years in military service a blur, it is evident that his lifelong disciplinary background carries over to all his artistic endeavors. He thought himself to play guitar at the late age of 27. With the ability to now accompany his singing and blossoming songwriting, a troubadour lifestyle was born. He traveled to wherever he could be heard. Every street corner and public place now became a potential stage for him, and he busks while gracing some renowned stages along the way. He met and collaborated with like-minded artists who heard something say beyond the common trivialities of popular music. He tirelessly recorded and self-released album projects, namely, Love Sessions (2005), Unexpected Pleasures (2006), The Absence of Cool (2007), Love in a Time of Hope & Recession (2009), Soldier of Peace - Balogun ÌRÒRÙN (2011/2012), Ballads & Blasphemy (2015 Buda Musique), and ARIYO (2020), ‘Kiss My Ass (2022), and his latest new single, 'Bread of Life'.
