Walter studied art history and visual arts (painting, etching). His designs of record sleeves and posters introduced him to the Belgian pop music scene at the end of the seventies, resulting in a solo album with Flemish funky songs. After his remarkable participation in the Eurovision Song Contest of 1983 with his group Pas De Deux (with the song 'Rendez-Vous'), he decided to take leave of popular music and concentrate on the combination of video and music/sound. As a 'video composer', he worked in all kinds of disciplines throughout the years (video with music, theatre, dance, film, video art, video installations, video concerts, musical theatre, documentaries, video clips, tv titles…). Since his first trip to Africa in 1993, he created a lot of projects with African artists. After XAfrika, a video and music project about Mandinka music, he started with a series of workshops on video and dance, brought artists from all kinds of African and non-African cultures together under the name Trancemediamix and created with Matchume Zango the Timbila Tracks project. Timbila music will again be the starting point for a new audio-visual concert Mgodo Tracks, created in 2019. All his work is multidisciplinary. The interaction between video, dance, and music, moving image and sound, forms the constant topic in his work, that should be cataloged as 'visual music'.
