When I went away to figure out some things for myself
Ya I was nineteen
Just a kid with a dream
Had no plans and nowhere to go
So I followed my friends
And I Went off to school
Where buried myself in the loans
All of the things I thought that I knew
Were quick to throw sand in my eye
But you can't pay your dues
Without lessons to learn
And learning is always a price

So I went off to work
Put my hands in the dirt
Swinging hammers and pulling my weight
Had to show all my friends
That money I earned
Thought my wallet might carry my worth
All the things I thought that I knew
Pushed me down and spit in my face
But you can't pay your dues
Without lessons to learn
I seem to be leaning on grace

Workin for the man and the bills
Settle down those of you who worry too much
Doubt is a merciless thief
