Just the way we know it, you could say that it's ingrained
That we must work to prove ourselves, for everything we gain
And though I don't deserve it, Jesus went against the grain
When He never asked a thing of me before offering His grace
He's given me that I'm not worthy of, on the basis of love!
On the basis of love, God gave His son
On the basis of love, new life has been won
Saved and forgiven, it's finished and done
And we'll live for Him on the basis of love!
We work and give, we go to church
Righteous in our eyes
Thinking that we'll measure up, believin' out own lies
We feel the need to offer exchanges for His grace
But who has given a gift to Him that He might be repaid
When His blood shed on the cross it fell on us, on the basis of love
Out of love, I will abide
And His name will be glorified
Oh, apart from Christ we are paralyzed
Saved and forgiven, finished and done
We'll live for Him on the basis of love
