A dark and silent world In shapeless void lay furled Beneath the great creating Hand The Word of power rang And light from darkness sprang The night withdrew at His command The day before Him stood And God declared it good The vagrant vapors heard Assembled at His word The silent seas and hills obeyed Again His power spoke The vales to verdue woke The rising skies His wealth displayed The worlds before Him stood And God declared them good His word of wisdom willed The fields and forests filled The creatures came at His decree Then on this earth He breathed His image bright bequeathed That man a living soul should be The man before Him stood And God declared him good Upon earth's ordered frame Sin's curse of chaos came And man to dark and void returned But God's incarnate word Once more the darkness stirred Till hearts anew with brightness burned And where those souls have stood Their God shall call them good
