I watched the prairie spring to life
The little critters with delight
Awake their babes and to them make
A promise that sun will rise
I watched the prairie turn to gold
Its wheat now tall and lank and grown
Dance and sway in playful youth
With merry toward all yet to unfold
I watched this prairie set to rest
Their red and purple blending west
Awake the sky for one last time
Taking none and giving best
I watched this prairie fill with snow
Inhabitants dig down below
